Rothang “closed again”

A number of vehicles bound for Lahaul on the Manali-Leh road had to turn back on Sunday after another foot of fresh snow on the Rothang La. News talk about  detoriating weather and snowfalls the last two weeks. Fair amount of snow already at Gulaba , just under three thousand meters , from the looks of The Tribune pic :

BRO says first goal is clearing the road in to Lahaul , no details on how far the work has progressed in the Baralacha La.

UPDATE , FRIDAY 15th : (from a story on the Himachal elections in Spiti ) …the road link to the Lahaul valley through the Rohtang Pass opened again last (Monday) evening for small and emergency vehicles. People who migrated to nearby districts during winter can now come for voting,” Lahaul and Spiti Deputy Commissioner C. Paul Rasu said.

  1. Seems like the most unpredictable weather this year. First, little snow in winter and then intermittent snow fall continuing for a long time.

Read somewhere that bad weather killed 2 people at Sar Pass area.

I am still wondering where in the Himalayas to go this year..

  2. Latest comment from GREF that is responsible for the Manali-Leh road was about working on all sections , and concentrating on opening the Rothang first. That should mean that the Baralacha La isn´t cleared yet.

  3. Looks like it will be an intresting ride to leh this year!

We will be on the manlali leh road around the 3rd of june.

  4. hey guys ,,,any update on when will the manali _ leh road will be open to tourist traffic,
